January 2010 Meeting Highlights

Veterans Day Special Event

Rick McKnight gave a great presentation for a Veterans Day Special Event that he asked the club to sponsor. His vision is for the club to set up a special event station and a recurring Ham Radio presentation for the veterans at the uptown VA. The goal would be to generate some interest for the Veterans to get involved in Ham Radio as a potential therapy. We hope that it would ultimately lead to some of them getting their license and setting up a permanent station at the uptown VA for the Veterans to use. Club members would help with the classes, testing and setting up a station The CCARC members voted to support the Veterans Day special event.

Georgia ARES D-Star Repeaters

Georgia ARES has recently received a grant to install 9 D-Star repeater sites throughout the state. Georgia Public Broadcasting has provided the location and antennas for the installations. GAARES has purchased the equipment and will be installing the repeater systems (2M, 70 cm, and 1.2 Ghz repeaters make up a system). They are looking for a club and/or group of individuals to sponsor each repeater system. Our club president spoke with John Davis who is the GAARES SEC for GPB and he stated that training would be provided on the D-Star system maintenance and operation to the sponsors.

The CCARC voted to sponsor the Wrens D-Star repeater system if a sponsor is still needed and if the club would not incur any costs. The club will provide technical on-site support and other efforts necessary to keep the system online. GAARES and GPB will take care of the big ticket hardware items (antennas, feed line, repeaters, computers, and controllers). These systems have amazing capability for Emergency Communications and are being put up in the entire southeast (Al, SC, FL, NC, GA). John Davis has agreed to give the CCARC a presentation on D-Star at some point in the future

Committees Forming for 2010

With the new year already here the club is looking for some committees to sponsor our club events. The routine committees needed so far are: Repeater committee, Field Day committee (June 26 & 27), W4O Special Event (Oct.), JOTA special Event (Oct. 16-17), and Boy Scout Merit Badge University (Feb. 6). A new addition might be the Veterans Day Special Event. So we have plenty of opportunity for all members to get directly involved with helping to make each of these events a success. At February's meeting we will have a presentation on D-Star.
